Goodafternoon.Onmyorders,theUnitedStatesmilitaryhasbegunstrikesagaitalQaedaterroristtrainingcamandmilitaryitallatiooftheTalibanregimeinAfghanistan.ThesecarefullytargetedactioaredesignedtodisrupttheuseofAfghanistanasaterroristbaseofoperatio,andtoattackthemilitarycapabilityoftheTalibanregime.
Wearejoinedinthisoperationbyourstaunchfriend,GreatBritain.Otherclosefriends,includingCanada,Australia,GermanyandFrance,havepledgedforcesastheoperationunfolds.Morethan40countriesintheMiddleEast,Africa,EuropeandacroAsiahavegrantedairtraitorlandingrights.Manymorehavesharedintelligence.Wearesuortedbythecollectivewilloftheworld.
Morethantwoweeksago,IgaveTalibanleadersaseriesofclearandecificdemands:CloseterroristtrainingcamhandoverleadersofthealQaedanetwork;andreturnallforeignnationals,includingAmericancitize,unjustlydetainedinyourcountry.Noneofthesedemandsweremet.AndnowtheTalibanwillpayaprice.Bydestroyingcamanddisruptingcommunicatio,wewillmakeitmoredifficultfortheterrornetworktotrainnewrecruitsandcoordinatetheirevilpla.
Initially,theterroristsmayburrowdeeperintocavesandotherentrenchedhidingplaces.Ourmilitaryactionisalsodesignedtoclearthewayforsustained,compreheiveandrelentleoperatiotodrivethemoutandbringthemtojustice.
Atthesametime,theoreedpeopleofAfghanistanwillknowthegenerosityofAmericaandourallies.Aswestrikemilitarytargets,we”llalsodropfood,medicineandsuliestothestarvingandsufferingmenandwomenandchildrenofAfghanistan.
TheUnitedStatesofAmericaisafriendtotheAfghanpeople,andwearethefriendsofalmostabillionworldwidewhopracticetheIslamicfaith.TheUnitedStatesofAmericaisanenemyofthosewhoaidterroristsandofthebarbariccriminalswhoprofaneagreatreligionbycommittingmurderinitsname.
