TsinghuaUniversitywasfounded,withthesuortofAmerica,tofurtherthetiesbetweenourtwonatio.IknowhowimportantthisplaceistotheVicePresident,whoearnedhisdegreehereandevenmoreimportant,methisgraciouswifeLiuYongqinghere.
Ialsothankthestudentshereforthisoortunitytomeetwithyou,totalkalittlebitaboutmycountryandawersomeofyourquestio.Thestandardsandreputationofthisuniversityareknownaroundtheworld,andIknowwhatanachievementitistobehere.MywifeLauraandIhavetwodaughtersincollege,oneatYaleandtheotherattheUniversityofTexas.WeareproudofourdaughtersjustlikeIamsureyourparentsareproudofyou.
MyvisittoChinacomesonanimportantaiversary.Thirtyyearsagothisweek,anAmericanPresidentarrivedinChinaonatripdesignedtoenddecadesofestrangementandconfrontcenturiesofsuicion.PresidentRichardNixonshowedtheworldthattwovastlydifferentgovernmentscouldmeetonthegroundsofcommoninterest,andinairitofmutualreect.Astheylefttheairportthatday,PremierZhouEnlaisaidtoPresidentNixon,``Yourhandshakecameoverthevastestoceanintheworldtwenty-fiveyearsofnocommunication.””
Duringthe30yearssince,AmericaandChinahaveexchangedmanyhandshakesoffriendshipandcommerce.Andaswehavehadmorecontactwitheachother,thecitizeofourtwocountrieshavegraduallylearnedmoreabouteachother.
Once,AmericaknewChinaonlybyitshistoryasagreatandenduringcivilization.Today,weseeaChinathatisstilldefinedbynobletraditiooffamily,scholarship,andhonor.AndweseeaChinathatisbecomingoneofthemostdynamicandcreativesocietiesintheworldasdemotratedbyalltheknowledgeandpotentialrighthereinthisroom.
Chinaisonarisingpath,andAmericawelcomestheemergenceofastrong,peaceful,andproerousChina.
