Thoughwemarchtothemusicofourtime,ourmiionistimele.EachgenerationofAmerican”smustdefinewhatitmeatobeanAmerican.Onbehalfofournation,Isalutemypredeceor,PresidentBush,forhishalf-centuryofservicetoAmerica,andIthankthemillioofmenandwomenwhosesteadfastneandsacrificetriumphedoverdepreion,fascismandcommunism.
Today,agenerationraisedintheshadowsoftheColdWaraumesnewreoibilitiesinaworldwarmedbythesuhineoffreedom,butthreatenedstillbyancienthatredsandnewplagues.Raisedinunrivalledproerity,weinheritaneconomythatisstilltheworld”sstrongest,butisweakenedbybusinefailures,stagnantwages,increasinginequality,anddeepdivisioamongourownpeople.
WhenGeorgeWashingtonfirsttooktheoathIhavejustsworntouphold,newstravelledslowlyacrothelandbyhorseback,andacrotheoceanbyboat.Nowthesightsandsoundsofthisceremonyarebroadcastitantaneouslytobillioaroundtheworld.Communicatioandcommerceareglobal.Investmentismobile.Technologyisalmostmagical,andambitionforabetterlifeisnowuniversal.
WeearnourlivelihoodinAmericatodayinpeacefulcompetitionwithpeopleallacrotheEarth.Profoundandpowerfulforcesareshakingandremakingourworld,andtheurgentquestionofourtimeiswhetherwecanmakechangeourfriendandnotourenemy.ThisnewworldhasalreadyenrichedthelivesofmillioofAmericawhoareabletocompeteandwininit.Butwhenmostpeopleareworkingharderforle,whenotherscaotworkatall,whenthecostofhealthcaredevastatesfamiliesandthreatetobankruptourenterprises,greatandsmall;whenthefearofcrimerolawabidingcitizeoftheirfreedom;andwhenmillioo
