Goodmorning.AsIenterthefinalweekofmypresidency,I”mextraordinarilygratefulforalltheprogrewe”vemadetogethertheselasteightyears--buildingthestrongesteconomyinageneration,renewingourethicofreoibility,andstrengtheningthebondsofcommunityandfamilyallacroAmerica.TodayIwanttotalkaboutourprogreinreducingyouthviolenceandnewstewe”retakingtomakeourcommunitiesevensafer.
Overthepastfewyears,terribletragediesatColumbineandotherschoolshaveforcedustotakeahardlookatyouthviolence,andanevenharderlookatwhateachofuscandoandmustdotoeurethatsuchtragediesdonothaenagain.
Althoughtherearenosimplesolutio,recentevidencesuggestswearemovingintherightdirection.Accordingtothelatestdata,violentcrimebyyoungpeoplehasbeencutnearlyinhalfsince1993;schoolyarddeathshavedroeddramatically.Thesearebothimportantdeclinesthatreflectthelowestnationalcrimeratein25years.
But,still,wehavemoretodo.Atmydirection,theWhiteHouseCouncilonYouthViolencehasdevelopedanewweiteandtoll-freeinformationlinetohelpparentsandeducatorsgetthefactstheyneedtoreduceyouthviolence.Theweiteaddreismunicatingbetterwithteenagers.ItincorporatesthelatestresearchaswellasthebestideasfromtheWhiteHouseConferenceonTeenagers,whichHillaryandIooredlastyear.We”lldistributethispublicationnationwidethroughtheweite,thetoll-freelineandwiththeaistanceofschoolprincipals,schoolnursesandpediatricia.
Likeallparents,HillaryandIknowit”snotalwayseasytotalkwithyourchildrenaboutseitivesubjects.That”swhythisnewguideissoveryvaluable--becauseitteachesparentshowtolistenmorecarefullytotheirchildrenandnurturerelatiohibuiltontrust,love,disciplineandreect.
